Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Life there isn’t easy—many families scrape by on almost nothing ($2.15 a day for 70% of Malawians). But there’s one thing every kid knows how to do: play soccer. A dusty patch of ground, a ball that’s seen better days, and the game is on.
Adziwa Orphanage, founded in 1999, takes its name from the national language, Chichewa. It means “He knows.” For years, soccer has been a lifeline for kids there, a way to escape, to belong.
