Raising the Profile of Katundu
Imbeko successfully toured the Katundu workshop on the shores of Lake Malawi, dedicating its time and resources to supporting the local artists.
Katundu is a creative workshop situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Malawi, managed by Lisa Njakale and Philli Mwase. The proceeds from Katundu’s sales support vital anti-poaching efforts on Likoma Island, addressing the significant poaching challenges faced in the region.

Katundu collects poaching gear found on the island and transforms it into decorative pieces, including wall art, tables, mats, beaded textiles, tumbled glass chandeliers and cushion covers to support the local community, particularly women, by providing sustainable employment.
The Problem of Poaching/Illegal Fishing in Malawi
Poaching on Likoma Island involves harmful practices such as undersized nets and dynamite, leading to overfishing and threatening local livelihoods.
Consequently, fish stocks around Likoma Island have dwindled, impacting food security and income for residents.
This overfishing also has detrimental environmental effects, harming Lake Malawi’s ecosystem by damaging coral reefs and disrupting aquatic habitats, putting various fish species at risk.
